Ok Deal on Glad Storage Bags at Menards

Hubby and I have been doing some remodeling, which means that we’ve been living at Menards. I’m tempted to start having our mail forwarded. We were there returning some towel bars (because who got the wrong size? Oh yes, that was me. Who nagged hubby to switch them out, so he took down one of them just to discover his wife bought the wrong size? Oh yes, that was me, too. Who couldn’t find the receipt for them? Yup, you’re right, me again. Then who couldn’t remember which card she used to pay when attempting to print a replacement at the store? You’re getting so good at this! Yes, me! He didn’t kill me, no, but I think it would have been a justifiable homicide.)

ANYWAY, while we were there returning some things and buying more things, I saw an endcap with big boxes of Glad bags on rebate! $7.99 with a $3 rebate, limit of 3 per household. If you had these $1/2 printables (which of course, I didn’t), you can get these for just $4.50 a box. And there are 4 high count boxes inside the big boxes. So you get 600 sandwich bags for $4.50. It’s not an earth shattering deal, but we needed bags, so I picked up three of them. Don’t forget that with Menards rebates, you get the money back as a Menards store credit. That’s fine with us, since we’re basically sending them most of our money anyhow.

This rebate is on through 7/31.

The “Secret” to a Mortgage-Free Home

ShhhhShhhh, originally uploaded by ecastro.

Since posting that we’ve paid off our home in a bit more than three years, I’ve gotten quite a few comments and email asking me to share our “secret”. I kind of feel ill equipped here…. If there’s a “secret”, I don’t know what it is. It’s a combination of life choices, hard work, and where we live, I think. The price of living in our part of the country isn’t what it is in other parts. If we lived in southern California, I don’t know if we would have been able to pay off our home so quickly. If we had kids, I’m pretty sure it would have taken more than three years before our mortgage was paid. Or if I didn’t work. Or if we didn’t get a “thrill” out of saving a buck. I can’t point to one thing and say: “This is it! This is how you pay off your house in three years! Follow these twelve simple steps.” I wish it were that way….

From a pure math standpoint, we made three mortgage payments a month on our 15 year mortgage, then an extra payment at the end of the year. That’s the basic arithmetic portion of the entire thing.

I’m happy to answer questions, but for everyone who was hoping I knew some “secret”, I’m sorry to disappoint… I don’t. But if I stumble across one, you all will be the very first to know.

Tricky Register Programming at Meijer

First things first, check your mPerks account. I got $2 off a $2 purchase, and my husband got a $5 off a $5 purchase. Can you say seven free dollars? Ok, onto the actual story here.
Tonight hubby and I went to Meijer to pick up a few things and use our mPerks. I also had two coupons for free items, Stouffer’s Saut├ęs for Two and International Delight Creamer. So I bought a loaf of rye bread for $2.50, used my $2 mPerks, so I paid $.51. Hubby got everything else. I noticed that the free coupons didn’t ring up for the full price of the items. The Souffer’s was $6.99 and the International Delight was $1.50. The coupons rang up for $5.45 and $1.17 respectively. Can you say not the same? So she did, uh, something, and all the coupons came off. She was going to try it again. She scanned the free coupons, and they each took off the full amount. Then hubby entered his mPerks number, and the values of the coupons changed! The price actually went UP after he entered his mPerks number! My guess is that the mPerks somehow reduces the “price” of the items in the order, rather than just taking the $5 off the top of the order. So what does this mean? That means you should buy any items that you have free coupons separately from other items if you plan to use one of these dollars off your purchase mPerks coupons. I’m planning to send

We Did It!

Yes, it’s true. A little more than three years after we bought our house, we’ve made our final mortgage payment. To say it’s exciting would be the understatement of the century. The freedom of not having a mortgage is just unreal to me. Now to just get rid of my student loan and really be debt free.

Are you paying on a mortgage? What are you going to do when it’s paid off?

Where, Oh, Where has Coupon Lady Online Been?

Excellent question! I’ve been very busy doing lots of things that are not frugal but are a TON of fun. As you may or may not know, my very favorite band on the entire planet is on tour right now. The Monkees are on their 45th anniversary tour. It’s just three of them (no Mike, as usual), but this is something I don’t want to miss. Peter will be 70 next year, so who knows how much longer you’ll be able to see the three of them together? They haven’t toured together since 2001, so this isn’t exactly an everyday kind of event. So my mother and I decided to go to not one, not two, not three, but four concerts in just five days! Yes, we’re a bit crazy. But it was TOTALLY worth it!

We had three “meet and greet” opportunities (I thought we only had one), and that made the whole thing even more special. We made an awesome new friend, Kim. She was at almost all the shows we went to, and she’s going to a more shows in California. (I’m jealous.) Between hotels, gas, food, tickets, and souvenirs, I think I spent a small fortune, but it was worth EVERY PENNY. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
