Ever had a dream that you just thought would never come true? Always wanted to go to some city? Dreamed of having something you were sure you never would? I’ve had a dream like that for many years, and as much as I can’t believe it, it finally came true.
As you probably know if you’ve been reading Coupon Lady Online for very long, I’m a huge fan of The Monkees. I’ll go see any of them when they are around, which is more frequent now that I’m a midwest girl.
The Monkees consists of four members: Micky, Davy, Peter, and Mike. Micky, Davy, and Peter still perform solo fairly regularly. I’ve seen them all within the past year (ok, year and a few months in the case of Peter). I’ve got tickets to two upcoming Davy shows in 2011. I even flew to LA last year to have lunch with Micky Dolenz.
Well, that’s all well and good, but I’ve always dreamed of meeting Mike. Mike doesn’t perform live that often anymore. He’s not done a live show that I’ve known of since 1996. I’ve seen all the other Monkees, but never Mike. Earlier this year he received an award, and I seriously considered flying to Texas and paying the $500+ for a ticket just so I could lay eyes on him once. It turned out that it didn’t work out for me to do that, and I had resigned myself to the fact that I would never get the chance to see him.
Then came Dec 13th. I received an email from Mike’s website that there was going to be an exclusive event in Austin, Texas. Those who attended would get to see a live performance by Mike and actually meet him! But the catch was the event was that Saturday, the 18th. I would have to be in Texas in less than a week! After an extremely brief consultation with the hubby, we decided we were going to go. This was a once in a lifetime experience, and I wasn’t going to miss it. I booked plane tickets, a rental car, and a hotel. We were going to Texas.
We arrived in Austin late Friday night, and I had a terrible time sleeping. I was so excited. Saturday morning we arrived at the venue around 9:30am, and within just a few minutes, I saw him!! He was talking to some folks across the building. I thought I might die. We stayed all day. Mike started warming up around 1:30, and we got to watch. When he was done, he passed out glow in the dark guitar picks that said NEZ on them (SO COOL)! After his amazing hour long set, he did a meet and greet. I got an autograph, and this picture!!!
That’s me with Mike Nesmith! He was very nice and friendly. I was so amazed at how much time he took with each of us who came. It was really phenomenal. He signed the insert from their Greatest Hits CD that I’d had signed by the other 3 previously. So I actually have something signed by all four Monkees! It’s nuts!
This was anything but a frugal experience, but it was truly once in a lifetime. I’m still asking myself if it actually happened.
